Purpose
The MEG community worldwide is a small one, with around 150 MEG laboratories. While there is a bi-annual conference, BIOMAG, there is no associated professional society, and no dedicated journal. Although there are smaller professional groups for clinical MEG, there is no broader group encompassing the entirety of MEG research. The MEG North America workshop was initiated in 2016 to provide an opportunity for North American research and clinical MEG labs to gather in the hopes of fostering collaboration.
The inaugural meeting sought to answer these questions:
1. What does MEG add to the field of neuroscience above and beyond other existing techniques? 2. How can we support the evolution of MEG acquisition and methods, through both software and hardware? 3. How can we develop and support infrastructure to share data and facilitate big science? 4. How could an MEG-North America consortium work to address these issues?
Subsequent meetings have continued to explore these topics, with the addition of a Hackathon to focus on MEG analysis methods that will benefit the community at large.
